The tools in the marketing toolkit are expanding offering you significant advantage if you use a full service

The latest tool (and even more exciting potentially than social networking) is the QR code. A QR code is a printed barcode which we can make point to a Smartphone engineered website, promotional video, social networking site or anything else we choose.

Let’s think about this: a QR code on your press advertisement can allow the reader to access product information, product demonstrations, and an online appointment request form. A QR code on a recruitment ad can take the reader to a video or website about the role and/or the company. The QR code can be on packaging, on a poster, on a bus back, on a t-shirt, on a charity collecting tin, on an estate agency for sale sign, on a TV ad. ‘But not everyone has a Smartphone’ I hear you say.

Consider this: In 2011, sales of smart phones and tablet PCs are expected to outstrip sales of desktop PCs and laptops combined (source Morgan Stanley – The Mobile internet). In 2013, sales are expected to be near 650m (nearly one phone for every ten people alive today shipped in a single year). According to mobile information analyst WCIS, the UK has the fifth highest population of 3G subscribers in the world.

What does this mean for marketing your business? Unlike a computer or TV, you don’t only turn on your phone when you want to use it. Your prospective clients will be at least as likely to access the internet on a phone as by any other means. They won’t stay on your site if it doesn’t offer them a Smartphone enabled version. Link that to a QR code and/or a video ‘commercial’ and you start to put clear blue water between you and your competitors.
